We do not have Halloween in Mexico, we’ve “Day of the dead”, which is three times in a row, beginning October 31 and then in the night of November 1 is the passing of our beloved dead ones during our homes where we’ve set an “ofrenda”, (an altar) dedicated to them. The platforms include flowers (Zempasuchitl and others in purple and yellow colours), candles, sugar candy skulls,” pan de Muerto”, photos, memorabilia and the food and beverages that our loved ones enjoyed. Throughout the night, -we do not sleep but instead peacefully talk to them when they come and check that they still have a place with us.
On November 2, we see their graves at the cemetery in which their corpses were buried. The visit might become a delicate and sentimental Fiesta, together with musicians playing the songs that are passed away loved ones enjoyed and we’ll eat delicious tamales, mole with tortillas and drink plenty of tequila or mezcal; laughing and yelling for them.
So, the Day of the Dead isn’t happy though not sorrowful either. It only imagines that Death is by our side all the time and that it may kiss us if she likes.
